40 runners braved the coldest parade day in five years last Saturday in the St. Patrick's Parade Shamrock Mile. Although it was a beautiful looking day with the sun shining, the headwinds and below-freezing temperatures fought the runners as much as the slight uphill over the entire course.
That didn't stop some of the top runners from running close to a 5 minute mile though. The winner was Chris Simser, a U-E xc and track runner, in 5:09 who beat out Josh Schultheis of Seton HS by just one second. Right after them were the open division winners Mike Murphy - sporting a subtle green mohawk - and Byron LaBare in 5:15 and 5:19, respectively. For the women Murphee Hayes won in 5:46. As she finished she said the race was nothing like running an indoor mile, but she still had fun. Behind her were high schoolers Beth Stone and Maegan Lewis from a large contingent from Blue Ridge. Seton HS was well represented with the help of coach Suzanne Myette. Several families ran together including the Felices led by Jeff's daughter Jessica.
It was a close decision for the "Most Irish Runner," but 15 yr. old Craig Fox took the title for the second time in three years. He not only ran into the wind, he carried a large flag with shamrocks on it and wore a green wig the whole way! An honorable mention goes to 13 yr. old Mary Katherine Kulp who ran the race, jogged back to the beginning of the parade, and performed with her Irish Dance group down the entire route again!
Thanks to George Joseph, the TCRC, and all our volunteers for their help!
